How To Choose A Business Name
Many people have a name in mind when they start a new business but many don't too. It may seem like an easy enough task but there are a few considerations before finalising a business name. These considerations are pertinent too if you are going to build a website and are looking for a domain name.
Legal Requirements
If you are going to be a limited company, you will need to choose a name before making your application to Companies House. The name will need to be available to register and legally compliant. To ensure this is the case you should familiarise yourself with company name rules and restrictions.
Make sure the domain is available
Your website address is often used for people to find your site. It needs to make a good impression for usability purposes, as well as for search engine optimisation (SEO). Ideally make it a .com domain name unless it is more appropriate to use another extension, such as .edu, or .org
Easy to spell
It is great to want to have a name that stands out from the crowd but people must be able to easily spell it and easily pronounce it.
keep it short
The shorter the better. You want people to easily be able to type it into search engines and remember it.
Allow for growth
Avoid limiting your company name to a location or product. These types of names can be restrictive if your business wants to relocate or alter course with regards to its product line.
Make it meaningful
Choose a name that is meaningful and related to what your company does. Try not to make the name too obscure. Whilst many large brands have made it with obscure names they have had large marketing budgets to ensure the name becomes a household brand. The name needs to echo with your target market.
Whatever you decide, you need to like it as it will hopefully be with you for a long time.
