Is Your Company Identity Legally Compliant on Your Website?

Is your company identity legally compliant on your website? In the UK, your business website should comply with current legislation. Many marine businesses do not comply with this legislation. This could be because their website developers are unaware of the need to do so. They should have this knowledge on behalf of their clients. When engaging a web developer there is an element of trusting them to ensure the website is compliant. This is something that we address for all our clients when developing a new website.

There are many legal requirements that pertain to your websites. For example, GDPR, policies and procedures, consumer protections, accessibility, and cybersecurity. We are only going to look at how you disclose the identity of your business.

The information regarding your identity does not need to be on every page. It does, however, have to be easy to find. We suggest that it should be on your contact page or/and your website footer.

What should be on your website?

  • Company Name
  • If you are a limited company the registration number and place of registration, such as England and Wales.
  • Registered office address.
  • If your postal address is different from your registered office address this should be listed too. This is covered under the necessity to have how to contact your business by non-electronic means.
  • Your email address. Using a contact form is not enough. You should also have your email address listed on your website.
  • If you are VAT registered you should have your VAT number registered.
  • The name of any trade bodies or professional associations along with their registration numbers should be listed.
  • A phone number is not a requirement but we feel it builds trust with your customers. If you do put your telephone number remember to make it a clickable link so people browsing on their mobiles can easily call you.

It's always a good idea when in the development stage of your website to get legal advice to keep your company website legally compliant.
