Why do you need to optimise your website images?

SPC Marine Marketing Why you need to optimise your website images

With hundreds of websites being added to Google every second, it is important to make sure your Images are optimised for search engines. In the past it has been something that many web developers have ignored, focusing on keywords and other ways to try and beat Google's algorithm.

If you wish to improve the SEO of your website, you need to make sure your images are given Alt text (this can also be called Alt tags or Alt attributes).

Another reason to ensure you have this descriptive text is to assist visually impaired people who have screen readers.

When you upload your images to your website, most sites will give you the opportunity to add an Alt text. By not creating this text you are missing the chance to be as visible as possible.

So what do you put in the Alt text?

  • Alt text should not be just your keywords, it should be a descriptive test to help visitors. Use your keyword or key phrase only

  • It should describe your images.

  • It should be as unique as possible

  • Use a maximum of 16 words or at least have the most pertinent words in the first 16 words

  • For example, if the image is a sailing boat owned by diva charters sailing in Greece your Alt text might read... Diva Yacht Charters 45-foot sailing yacht in Corfu, Greece.

If you are unsure of how to do this ask your web developer to show you as getting him/her to do it will be quite costly. We are happy to take a look at your website from a users perspective and SEO angle. This is a FREE consultation and we will also review your social media sites and give you actionable feedback.
